Abstract

The problem of this research is document characteristic that cited by students of Doctoral Program in Medical Science, Postgraduate Schools of USU in writing dissertation. The objectives of research are to know: (a) the rank of authors that cited; (b) the most common magazine and scientific journal that cited; (c) the obsolescence of documents that cited; and (d) the form or types of library materials that cited by students of Doctoral Program in Medical Science, Postgraduate Schools of USU. The approach that used in this review is bibliometric approach. The population in this research is all dissertations of students of Doctoral Program in Medical Science Postgraduate Schools of USU, which are available at the USU Library. All dissertations are made as sample of research. The total of document cited in all dissertations is 816 documents with average of citation are 117 per dissertation. The average citation by author on personal name is 114. Majority of document cited in all dissertations use current information source, i.e. scientific journal 63,5% of total document cited. The most common big five rank of scientific journal cited including: Journal of Cancer, Contact Dermatitis, Thromb Haemost, Trans Roy Soc Trop Med Hyg and Ann Thorac Surge. The oldest age of document in term publication which is cited is 1894, and the new one is 2003. The length of obsolescence or half-life of document cited is 20 years. About 58,4% of document cited in all dissertations is under 20 years of age or under age point of document obsolescence.
